Nascholing

Biodynamische Cranio

Bio = Life, Living Organisms

Dynamics = The forces which stimulate growth, development or change within a system or process.

Biodynamics is therefore the study of the energy or forces at work within living organisms.

These seminars form a deepening enquiry into the fundamental universal forces that organize and sustain life. Dr William Garner Sutherland was the first to recognize a rhythmic movement of the cranial bones, and to name this as ‘Primary Respiration’. He was inspired by the Potency of the Breath of Life, the ‘liquid light’, which ignites and animates all living organisms. In the mid 20th Century, Dr Rollin Becker furthered this enquiry, emphasizing the importance of being guided by a ‘listening’ approach, recognizing and harnessing the potential of self- corrective mechanisms within the body.

The practice of Craniosacral Biodynamics, as further developed and refined by Franklyn Sills of the Karuna Institute, orients the practitioner to the action of Potency within the suspensory fields of physical, fluid and tidal bodies and the slower tidal rhythms and healing processes orchestrated by the Intelligent Potency of the Breath of Life. This comprehensive post-graduate series offers a distillation of the work as taught at Karuna, a complete Biodynamic curriculum for  craniosacral practitioners trained in a different tradition.

These seminars are presented by Tanya Desfontaines, who studied and trained with Franklyn Sills and is currently Senior Tutor in Craniosacral Biodynamics at the Karuna Institute. The work of Franklyn Sills is offered here at PCSA with his explicit permission and patronage.

Seminar 1. Deepening into Biodynamics
The Three Bodies, Primary Respiration and Healing Processes

The intention of this 5 day seminar is to review and deepen participants’ understanding and experience of the ground of biodynamics in clinical work. We will orient especially to what is known as the ‘three bodies’ or ‘three fields’ and the unfolding of healing processes within each field of action. A series of perceptual and clinical exercises will be explored that, in a graded manner, aid in the clarification and deepening of these concepts and phenomena. There is an emphasis on our orientation to health and resource, as trauma work is introduced, orienting participants to grounding, pacing, appropriate use of embodied felt resources and mindfulness based verbal skills.

This course is highly recommended for practitioners who want to deepen their clinical understanding of biodynamics in craniosacral therapy. It forms a foundation upon which to layer further seminars and is suitable for qualified craniosacral therapists and final year students.

Topics will include:

Presence and the Safe Relational field

  • Settling into mindful awareness
  • Basic needs of being and the safe holding field
  • The two settlings – relational field and holistic shift

Seminar 2. The Long Tide, Bioelectric Ordering Field and Primal and Fluid Midlines

This second seminar builds upon the material presented in ‘Deepening into Biodynamics', exploring in greater depth the emergence of embryological forces in session work with an orientation to the primal midline and local bioelectric ordering field. Trauma work continues with the Orienting response, working with the cervical spine and inhalation stillpoint processes to augment the expression of potency through the fluid midline. All explorations are held within the vast and stable support of the Long Tide and Dynamic Stillness.

This course is highly recommended for practitioners who want to deepen their clinical understanding of biodynamics in craniosacral therapy. It is the second in a series of four seminars which together form a bridge into Biodynamics for practitioners trained in a different tradition and is suitable for qualified craniosacral therapists and final year students who have completed the foundation seminar (Deepening into Biodynamics) or an Introductory course.

Topics will include:

The Fluid Body

NEW: Seminar Trauma unravelled...

A 4 day Biodynamic Post-Graduate Seminar for Craniosacral Therapists

In this seminar we will examine the field of trauma work, learning a range of skills to aid the resolution of all kinds of traumatic imprints, from early developmental and birth trauma to issues of abuse and PTSD. We will learn to recognise and engage with the embodied expressions of these experiences using relational, verbal and biodynamic cranial skills.

Since the 1990s, Peter Levine has developed his trauma resolution model based on an understanding that trauma is physiological, and must therefore be treated in the body, not the mind. In recent years our cranial community has adopted and integrated tools from Levine’s Somatic Experiencing approach, working with embodied sensation.  As craniosacral therapists we have the additional ability to palpate traumatic activation in the body, allowing us to work subtly with the body memories of overwhelming experiences which often underlie anxiety states as well as chronic fatigue and depression.

Craniosacral biodynamics offers a unique and highly effective method of trauma resolution, whereby these embodied memories can be met and supported to release their charge in a safe and contained way.

Over these 4 days we will explore the relationship between stress, anxiety, depression and trauma, review the stress response, including Stephen Porges’ work on the polyvagal autonomic nervous system, and take an in-depth look at how we create safety, a pre-requisite for trauma healing.

We will spend time reviewing both sympathetic and parasympathetic responses, how these might be sensed in a cranial session, and how we can engage with these dysregulated states and support their resolution and integration.

We will also look at how we as therapists can resource and self-regulate when treating clients with trauma histories. This seminar is oriented to craniosacral practice and will provide therapeutic skills, which can be put to use with clients straight away.

This seminar will draw on elements of work presented in earlier seminars but stands as an open seminar for qualified craniosacral therapists and final year students who have taken at least Seminar One (or the Intro) and Seminar Two.

The role of nociception (pain reception), working with the nociceptive hierarchy and the down-regulation of nociceptive loops is explored clinically. Participants learn to orient to CNS shock affect and shock discharge, hyper-arousal states and emotional flooding. Cranial approaches to Porges’ paradigm of a triune autonomic nervous system are also explored.
